The Mediterranean Diet

How I Eat, How I Live, and Why This Is the Only Approach I've Ever Needed 🌿

I didn't discover the Mediterranean diet. I grew up eating it. Italian parents, a backyard vegetable garden, a family table that took up to an hour to leave, and the unshakeable belief that food is one of life's great pleasures. This was just how we lived.

It took me until recently to realise that what always felt completely normal to me is exactly what most people spend years desperately searching for. That realisation is why Vitality Marco exists.

I'm in my 50s. I'm leaner and stronger than I was at 30. I eat dessert after dinner every night. I take no pharmaceuticals and I haven't restarted a diet in decades. That's not genetics. That's the Mediterranean diet, lived consistently and enjoyed completely.

What the Mediterranean diet actually is

The Mediterranean diet draws its inspiration from the traditional eating habits of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Greece, Italy, Spain, France, Turkey, Morocco and Portugal all share variations of the same core principles: whole foods, healthy fats, lean proteins, plenty of vegetables and a relaxed, pleasurable approach to eating.

Mediterranean meals

But more than a set of food rules, it's a way of living. Meals eaten slowly with people you love. Produce bought fresh and in season. Movement woven into daily life rather than bolted on as a chore. That's the part most diet guides miss entirely.

Here's how I think about it in practice. Whole foods 80 to 90 percent of the time. Real meals built around vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fish, poultry, eggs and good olive oil. And zero guilt about the gelato, the tiramisu or the dessert after dinner. That's not the exception to the method. That's the method working exactly as it should.

Why it works so well, especially after 35

The Mediterranean diet is one of the most extensively researched eating patterns in the world. The evidence behind it is genuinely impressive. Improved cardiovascular health. Reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and cognitive decline. Better weight management without calorie counting. Higher sustained energy. Better sleep.

But here's what the research can't fully capture and what I can speak to from five decades of living this way. It works because it feels good. Not good in a disciplined, white-knuckling-through-it way. Good in a genuinely enjoyable, I-look-forward-to-every-meal way. And when your way of eating feels like your best life rather than a break from it, consistency stops being hard. It just becomes who you are.

That's especially important after 35, when your body becomes less forgiving of poor nutrition, more responsive to quality protein and anti-inflammatory foods, and when the all-or-nothing approach finally stops working for good.
